Now that winter is on its way, we know how much the cold weather can affect our lifestyles. While it might seem more desirable to stay indoors in front of the television than go outside, this certainly won’t work wonders on your health and can leave you feeling lethargic and down in the long-run.

In order to beat the winter blues you need to keep yourself occupied, both physically and mentally. After all, there’s no point in hiding away from the weather. Instead, you need to confront and overcome it. Here is how:

See your friends and family

Being around your loved ones will instantly help to lift your mood, no matter what time of year. Although the run-up to Christmas is a busy period, make time to see those who matter to you most. Whether you invite them round to your home, you go to theirs, or you arrange a day trip out, you’ll soon forget about the weather as you’ll be too distracted by all the fun you’re having.

Keep active

Get up and keep active. Just because you don’t have a beach holiday to work for doesn’t mean you can get out of exercising. There should really be no excuses when it comes to keeping fit, so incorporate a plan into your daily routine.

This could be anything from going on a jog on your lunch break or a long walk in the morning before work. You’ll find that you will feel a lot more refreshed, revitalised and ready to take on the day after doing so, not to mention the fact that you’re helping to boost your fitness levels.

Eat healthily

Of course, it is important to eat a healthy, balanced diet all-year-round. Come winter though, it can be tempting to indulge in carb-heavy, sugary “comfort” foods in a bid to forget about the cold weather. But this certainly isn’t the answer to curing the winter blues.

In fact, tucking into a selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables to make delicious and nutritious meals will make you feel energised, awake and ready to banish any negative thoughts.

Take up a new hobby

There’s no better time than the present to take up a new hobby, so why not do exactly that? If there’s always something you’ve dreamed of doing, be it ice skating lessons, art classes or learning to play an instrument, seek the opportunity and step out of your comfort zone.

Focusing your energies on a new task or activity will help to take your mind off any seasonal disturbances and ease your mind of any feelings of stress or anxiety.

Stay warm

It’s true that the winter season causes temperatures to drop both outdoors and indoors. This means that it’s all the more important to wrap up and stay warm. Not only will this help to make you feel comfortable, it will also help to ward off symptoms of cold and flu.

Invest in some thermal knitwear and make use of the central heating system inside your house. This will ensure you stay cosy and protected from the harsh winter weather and help to perk you up.
